“Skelton Workshops was formed in 2000 after the death of my father, John Skelton.
He was a successful sculptor and letter cutter and taught his skills to many students. I received an apprenticeship from him during which I learned the techniques of carving letters in stone and those of direct carving. This method involves gradually revealing the vision of the carver by removing material with chisels and mallets very similar to those used by our ancestors.
The process, which may seem slow at first, encourages a meditative atmosphere which then rewards the maker with a unique creation.
Our tutors convey the skills needed for students to achieve their individual ideas, both in sculpture and in letter cutting and informality and friendliness mean that participants also learn from each other.
You will be able to go home with a piece to enhance your homes and gardens, and with a sense of achievement.” - Helen Mary Skelton
